The KN Raj Memorial Award for Graduate Thesis is an annual award presented by the Economiga in partnership with the KN Raj Economics Club (RE Kerala Chapter) to honour graduate students who demonstrate excellence in economics research. This award is dedicated to the memory of Prof. KN Raj, a visionary economist and founder of the Centre for Development Studies (CDS) in Kerala, whose work continues to inspire a deeper understanding of development, institutional economics, and inclusivity.

The award seeks to promote high-quality, impactful research by graduate students in economics. It encourages innovative approaches that address contemporary economic challenges and align with Prof. Raj’s dedication to understanding the structural and micro-level realities of economic systems.

Institutional Economics
Studies that examine the role of institutions in shaping economic outcomes, inspired by Prof. Raj’s early emphasis on context-specific and people-centered institutions.
Regional Development
Projects that prioritise issues affecting regional economies, with preference given to candidates from regional universities.
Social and Economic Justice
Research that considers the intersections of historic and social oppression, focusing on marginalised communities.
Indian Economic Growth
Research that focuses on the dynamics of India's economic growth, including analysis of structural changes, policy impacts, and sustainable development pathways. This theme aligns with Prof. Raj’s legacy in shaping India’s development trajectory, from drafting the First Five-Year Plan to advocating for inclusive growth strategies.
